Writer shares a life out of the ordinary

LITERARY enthusiasts crammed into GPAC's Blakiston Theatre last night to hear from renowned politician, writer and broadcaster Barry Jones.

Dr Jones discussed his new book A Thinking Reed during his brief visit to Geelong as part of National Library Week celebrations.

The book details Dr Jones' amazing life, which has included stints as a television quiz champion, Australian minister for science, ALP national president and as a member of UNESCO's executive board in Paris.

It also looks at Dr Jones' lonely childhood in Melbourne during the depression and his fight against the death penalty.

Dr Jones was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993 for services to science and was nominated by the National Trust as one of 100 Australian living treasures.

Send Grads Out With Realistic Expectations

WASHINGTON, DC - During the convocation speeches she gives, educator and bestselling author Susan V. Bosak likes to remind graduates that there's only one American Idol each year. Having dreams is important -- and so too is tempering those dreams with realistic expectations. As National Chair of the Legacy Project, a multigenerational education initiative that encourages lifelong learning, Bosak offers some practical advice to graduates and their families.

Research shows that of those who graduate from high school and college, more than half find themselves aimless. Many people in their twenties and thirties experience depression because expectations for their life haven't met reality. And too many young people find themselves under their parents' roof, unable to pay their own bills.

Children as young as 4 to be given 'happiness tests' at school

Children as young as four are to take "happiness tests" in a controversial drive to force schools to improve the well-being of pupils, it has emerged.

Thousands of youngsters are expected to be quizzed on whether they are feeling optimistic, confident, loved and interested in other people.

They will be set questionnaires similar to the self-help quizzes found in women's magazines to check they are "feeling good about myself" and "dealing with problems well".

Under pressure: facing up to stress

Okay, admittedly, you'll probably never be called upon to stop a nuclear bomb, rescue kidnapped family members, infiltrate a drug cartel, or fake your own death, all of which the hero of 24 has had to do during the show's first five seasons. Your typical day may be less dramatic, but we bet you still know what it's like to face overwhelming stress. The question is, how are you handling it? Let's look at stress, what it does to your body, and how to stop it from taking over your life.

Get to know the enemy

We tend to think of stress as a single entity, but there are actually three kinds: acute stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress.

Acute stress is the most common type. It's caused by recent pressures and pressures we're anticipating in the near future.
