‘Little or no provision made for

There is little or no provision of psychotherapy for public patients and we really need psychotherapeutic services provided by the HSE for those who cannot afford such services, according to Dr Brion Sweeney, Chairman of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy.

Speaking at the Healing the Hurt event during the national conference of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy in Dublin Castle recently, Dr Sweeney said the provision of psychotherapy is largely limited to the private sector.

Dr Sweeney, a consultant psychiatrist, specialising in drug and alcohol abuse, said psychotherapy can be valuable in treating conditions ranging from anxiety disorders to substance misuse, depression, agoraphobia, or more severe mental health problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar depression.

In addition, Mr Dan Neville, who is Chairman of the Irish Association of Suicidology, deplored the absence of psychotherapists in the Irish psychiatric service.

Britney Writes Another Open Letter To Fans

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - With the exception of only a few words being muttered at her recent concert gigs, it's been a while since Britney has poured her heart out to her fans and let them know how she really feels. But now the singer wants to set the record straight about some things.

Britney has posted yet another personal message to fans on her official website. In the letter, the pop princess claims that she has been trying to get her life back in control since rehab, and that she simply wants people to see her for who she really is.

Although Britney was said to have been in rehab for post-partum depression and even attended AA meetings, the often in denial starlet insists alcohol nor the mommy blues were what got her into the Promises facility.

She writes, "Recently, I was sent to a very humbling place called rehab.

Stress can contribute to gum disease

A Brazilian review found a relationship among gum diseases and psychological factors such as stress, distress, anxiety, depression and loneliness.

The review, published in the Journal of Periodontology, found 57 percent of the studies included in the review showed a positive relationship between periodontal diseases and psychological factors.

Study author Daiane Peruzzo of the State University of Campinas in Piracicaba, Brazil, speculates the hormone cortisol may play a role in the possible connection between stress and periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases, if left untreated, can lead to bone loss or tooth loss.

People with high stress levels may be less attentive to oral hygiene and may increase their use of nicotine, alcohol or drugs, explained Preston D.

Dr. Gott: Alcoholic requires intervention

Dear Dr. Gott: I have a friend about whom I care deeply. He is an alcoholic. He is also going through a huge depression that has lasted for years. He doesn’t hold a steady job, so he has no health insurance or money. He won’t go to AA and said that he tried an antidepressant a long time ago when he had insurance, but it turned him into a zombie. Is there anything I can do to help?Dear Reader: Your friend cannot be forced into getting the help he needs unless he is a risk to himself or to others. I recommend that you approach this delicate issue by sharing your concerns with him and offering your support. Other family members can also be involved in a meeting, called a crisis intervention, during which options are discussed openly. There are two problems here: depression and alcohol abuse.

Convicted child molester who violated probation is ordered to prison

TOPEKA | A convicted child molester whose sentence of probation provoked outrage was ordered to prison Thursday for violating terms of that probation when he smoked marijuana.

Orlando Paul Cisneros, 39, had his probation revoked and was ordered to serve a nearly 13-year sentence. Cisneros was convicted this year on 17 counts of rape and sodomy for repeatedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl after giving her alcohol and drugs.

But instead of being sent to prison, Cisneros received three years of probation from Shawnee District Court Judge Matthew Dowd. Dowd said Cisneros was suffering from depression and that he had a steady work history and a family to support.

The leniency prompted criticism from the girl's family, some state lawmakers, and national commentators like Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.
